What does this occupation involve?

Housekeeping includes bathrooms and floors, but also beds, linen and room supplies. You check facilities and report damage or faults. A room occupied by a continuing guest needs a different approach from one after checkout. Hotel procedures govern access, lost property and interaction with guests.

Preparing a guest room includes linen and clear handover

Hotel housekeeping combines cleaning with linen handling, replenishment and reporting defects. A departure clean differs from servicing an occupied room, where privacy and guest belongings need particular attention. Room status and the work list guide the sequence. Clean and used linen remain separate on the trolley, and bathroom materials follow the hotel's allocation system. Final checks cover the bed, bathroom, supplies and visible maintenance issues. Found items and damage follow the agreed recording process. A room is marked ready only after the required inspection and handover are complete.

What will you do?

  • Review the room list and prepare linen, products and supplies.
  • Make beds and handle used linen according to procedure.
  • Clean bathrooms, floors and contact surfaces.
  • Replenish towels and agreed guest items and check the room.
  • Report faults, found property and room status correctly.

Where will you work?

You work in hotels or other accommodation. Occupancy and arrivals influence the schedule, and weekends may be included. Walking and varied working positions are common. Coordination with reception and maintenance matters.

What does a working day look like?

You prepare the trolley, then complete assigned rooms using the hotel’s procedure. Each room is checked before its status is reported. Occupied rooms require attention to guest arrangements and access rules.

Which skills and experience help?

Attention to detail, discretion and a consistent sequence are valuable. You must understand instructions and guest arrangements. Describe experience with checkout rooms, occupied rooms, bathrooms and beds. Working pace must go together with quality and care for belongings.

How can you develop?

You can gain experience with more room types, linen service or room checks. Further knowledge may lead to training colleagues or supporting a housekeeping team.

Your practical experience

Compare a departure clean with an occupied-room service. Describe bed making, bathroom work, replenishing supplies and organising the trolley. Explain how you reported a defect, an item left behind or an incorrect room status. Experience inspecting completed rooms or helping new colleagues should be described separately from routine room servicing.

Practical questions about the trade

How does a departure clean differ from servicing an occupied hotel room?

A departure clean prepares the room for another guest under the hotel's standard. During a stay, the agreed service respects the current guest's property and privacy. The work list determines matters such as linen changes and replenishment. Check room status and access instructions, because an entry on the cleaning schedule does not automatically authorise entering an occupied room.

How should a room attendant organise linen and materials on a trolley?

The trolley needs sufficient clean linen and supplies, with a clear separation from used materials. Quantities should suit the assigned rooms while avoiding contamination of clean textiles. Bathroom and other surface materials follow the hotel's cleaning plan. At the end of the round, stock, waste and used materials follow their designated routes so the equipment is ready for further work.

What should a housekeeper check before marking a guest room ready?

Check the specified bed and bathroom presentation, required supplies and visible defects in the room. Found property is recorded through the agreed procedure rather than treated as ordinary waste. Report maintenance issues and status discrepancies to the appropriate team. Marking a room ready is a handover: colleagues need to trust that inspections are complete and outstanding problems are known.
