What does this occupation involve?
Work may use traditional hand tools, a water-fed pole or suitable access equipment. Interior and exterior glazing need different preparation. You aim for a clear finish, keep frames tidy and protect people and belongings near the work area. Window cleaning experience does not automatically cover every type of work at height. The equipment provided and your instruction determine the tasks you can undertake.
Clear glass depends on method and access
A window cleaner matches the method to the glass, contamination and available access. An applicator and squeegee remove water directly; a purified-water system with a telescopic brush uses a different process. Frames and edges can reintroduce dirt and belong in the final check. Equipment must also be manageable without unsuitable physical strain. Ground-based work and facade access equipment require different preparation. Weather, ground conditions and people passing through the area influence the job just as much as the number of windows to be cleaned.
What will you do?
- Assess the glazing and access to the work.
- Prepare the surrounding area and equipment.
- Clean the glass using the agreed method.
- Check edges, frames and remaining marks.
- Leave the working area clean and orderly.
Where will you work?
You work at homes, shops, schools or other buildings. Exterior work depends on weather and access. Considerate communication is useful when working at customers' premises.
What does a working day look like?
You review the route and any special arrangements. At each location, you prepare the area, clean the glass and inspect the result. Damage or inaccessible areas are reported rather than overlooked.
Which skills and experience help?
A consistent routine, an eye for streaks and careful equipment handling help. Explain which cleaning systems you know. Describe experience with platforms or other access equipment separately.
How can you develop?
You can progress into specialist glass or facade cleaning and route coordination. Experienced window cleaners may train colleagues and carry out quality checks.
Your practical experience
A glazed facade with difficult edges or limited access makes a useful experience example. Explain your choice of squeegee, pole or access equipment and how you checked for streaks. Describe height work through the particular method and equipment you actually used, rather than a general claim.
Practical questions about the trade
How does squeegee window cleaning differ from a pure-water system?
Traditional cleaning loosens the dirt and removes the cleaning water with a squeegee. A suitable pure-water system uses treated water, often through a brush on a telescopic pole. Access, surface and contamination influence the choice. These are different techniques with their own processes, so one set of equipment does not automatically suit every pane.
What does a window cleaner check when streaks remain?
Checks include remaining dirt, water around edges and the condition of the cleaning materials. Frames can release contamination onto glass that has already been cleaned. With pure-water work, the water-treatment system also matters; with conventional cleaning, the result of squeegee removal is assessed. Identifying the cause helps determine the appropriate follow-up work.
How is access selected for cleaning high windows?
First consider whether the windows can be reached from a safe position, for example using a suitable pole. Height, reach, ground conditions, duration and weather influence the choice. Other access equipment requires its own instruction and precautions. Ground-floor window-cleaning experience does not automatically demonstrate competence with facade equipment or another specialist method of working at height.
