What does this occupation involve?

Delivery work involves more than reaching an address. Goods must be loaded in a practical order, checked at delivery and recorded correctly. Routes can serve private homes, shops or businesses. The vehicle, load and type of service determine the exact duties, so parcel delivery and specialist goods transport should not be treated as identical roles.

Parcel delivery connects the route with an accurate handover

A delivery driver combines driving with organising and recording parcels. Loading considers the route and the ability to find the right shipment at each stop. At the address, the driver checks the parcel and any delivery instructions on the device. Some services require a signature or another confirmation. An unsuccessful attempt needs the correct status so the next action is clear. Accurate records are part of the delivery: handing over a parcel physically does not resolve a mismatched or incorrect system entry.

What will you do?

  • Check the route, delivery documents and assigned vehicle.
  • Load and organise goods according to the agreed handling instructions.
  • Drive the planned route and communicate delays or access problems.
  • Deliver goods and record receipt or unsuccessful delivery accurately.
  • Return undelivered items and complete the route handover.

Where will you work?

You work between a depot, the road and delivery addresses. Urban traffic, parking and weather affect the day. Loading and repeated entry into the vehicle make the role physically active as well as driving-based.

What does a working day look like?

You review the route and load the van before departure. Deliveries follow the plan, with updates when circumstances change. Back at the depot, you return outstanding goods and complete records for the next shift.

Which skills and experience help?

A suitable driving licence, careful driving and organised working are important. Discuss the vehicle category and any assignment-specific requirements. Navigation, customer communication and handling goods responsibly are valuable alongside driving experience.

How can you develop?

You can develop in more complex delivery routes, specialist goods or route coordination. Further training and the appropriate licence may provide opportunities with other types of commercial vehicle.

Your practical experience

Describe how you prepared a route and found parcels in the vehicle. Give an example involving a special delivery instruction or an absent recipient. Explain what you recorded on the device and how you reported damage or an incorrect address.

Practical questions about the trade

Why does parcel layout in the van matter to a delivery driver?

The load arrangement supports the route by making the correct shipment available at the correct stop. An unclear layout increases searching time and the possibility of overlooking a parcel. The driver uses the route information and agreed loading method while also considering safe load placement. Easy access alone does not establish an appropriate loading arrangement.

Is scanning a parcel the same as recording proof of delivery?

A scan identifies a shipment or records a stage in its journey. Required delivery confirmation depends on the service and can include a recipient signature. The driver follows the instruction for that parcel and records the actual event. A barcode scan therefore does not automatically replace evidence of the handover required by the service.

Can a delivery driver leave a parcel anywhere if the recipient is absent?

The next action depends on the carrier, service and shipment instructions. An agreed place may be available, but it does not apply to every parcel. Shipments requiring additional checks can have different conditions. The driver follows the indicated procedure and records an unsuccessful attempt accurately when the required handover has not taken place.
