What does this occupation involve?
Central heating involves more than a boiler. Pipes, radiators, pumps, valves and controls work together to distribute heat. Understanding those connections helps you identify the purpose of each component. Some jobs concentrate on installation, while others involve scheduled servicing and responding to faults in existing systems.
Separating boiler faults from heat-distribution problems
A heating technician works on both heat generation and its distribution around the building. Boiler servicing considers the appliance together with combustion-air supply and flue arrangements. A cold radiator, however, may involve air, restricted circulation or uneven water distribution. Diagnosis therefore depends on measurements and systematic comparisons before replacing parts. Appliance information and service records support that process. In the Netherlands, work on gas-burning installations within the CO scheme must be carried out by certified installation companies. Experience fitting heating pipework does not automatically establish competence or authorisation to service a gas boiler.
What will you do?
- Review work orders, diagrams and information about the existing system.
- Install pipes, radiators and assigned heating components.
- Identify leaks, wear and unusual operation and report your findings.
- Complete maintenance and checks within your competence and authorisation.
- Record replaced parts, findings and any necessary follow-up work.
Where will you work?
You visit homes, commercial buildings and plant rooms. Renovation often takes place while a building remains occupied. Protecting belongings, keeping the workspace orderly and explaining progress are part of professional installation work.
What does a working day look like?
You review the planned visits or project tasks, then discuss the situation on arrival. After inspecting the system, you perform the agreed work. The visit ends with checks, an explanation and a clear record of any outstanding issues.
Which skills and experience help?
Knowledge of heating systems, pipe materials and measuring tools is valuable. Servicing an appliance independently requires different competence from fitting radiators. Discuss your experience, training and authorisations against the actual role before starting.
How can you develop?
Possible directions include service engineering, heating controls and hybrid heating systems. You can also specialise in systematic fault diagnosis and adjusting systems to distribute heat effectively.
Your practical experience
Describe a boiler fault separately from a circulation problem affecting radiators or underfloor heating. Explain which temperatures, pressure readings or fault messages you compared and how you identified the cause. Experience with pumps, valves, combustion measurements and service reports is useful when the scope of your permitted work remains clear.
Practical questions about the trade
Why can a radiator stay cold while the boiler is running?
Producing heat does not ensure that heating water reaches every radiator correctly. Air, restricted flow, valve settings or an unbalanced system can leave some parts under-supplied. The technician compares the complaint with water-side operation and controls. Simply raising boiler temperature or replacing a suspected component does not necessarily address the underlying distribution problem.
Can every heating technician service gas boilers in the Netherlands?
Installation, maintenance and repair of gas-burning installations covered by the Dutch CO scheme are reserved for certified installation companies. The worker's competence and the company's work arrangements must fit that scope. Pipe-fitting experience or work on appliances abroad is not by itself evidence of authorisation. The actual task and company's certification scope therefore need checking.
Why is the flue checked as part of gas-boiler servicing?
A gas boiler operates together with its combustion-air supply and flue system. The technician therefore assesses the appliance, these connections and relevant components as an installation, recording the prescribed measurements and checks. Servicing is more than cleaning the boiler. Clearing a fault code alone also does not demonstrate that the cause has been resolved.
