What does this occupation involve?
An industrial door must suit both the building and the daily movement of goods or people. You work on tracks, panels and fixings, and sometimes on drives and controls. Installation, servicing and repairs may all form part of the role. The way a door is used determines the checks and handover information required.
Restoring movement while preserving protective functions
An automatic-door technician treats the door mechanism, drive, sensors and controls as one system. Sliding doors involve guidance and running gear, while swing doors occupy a different movement area with different contact risks. An activation device requests opening; protective sensors monitor the passage or relevant danger zones. Confusing those functions can lead to poor diagnosis. After repair or adjustment, the technician checks the intended operating modes and records the results. Interfaces with access control or an escape-route function also matter because the repaired door must continue to meet the requirements of the complete installation.
What will you do?
- Check measurements, installation drawings and the door opening.
- Fit tracks, panels, fixings and other assigned components.
- Identify and report wear or damage to moving parts.
- Check drives and controls within your competence and authorisation.
- Test completed work and hand over operating or maintenance information.
Where will you work?
You visit industrial premises, distribution centres and workshops. The business may continue operating during the work. Agreeing access and coordinating with the site contact and other workers are therefore important.
What does a working day look like?
You check the planned door type and required parts before travelling. On site, you confirm measurements and organise the workspace. Installation or repair is followed by testing, tidying up and recording what has been completed.
Which skills and experience help?
Mechanical understanding, accurate measuring and experience with fitting tools help. Powered doors also require relevant control-system knowledge. Springs, heavy panels and moving equipment require specific instruction; explain which door systems you have worked with.
How can you develop?
You can progress towards independent servicing, specialist fault finding or leading a fitting team. Knowledge of different door types and drives broadens your options in installation and maintenance.
Your practical experience
A fault on an automatic sliding entrance can demonstrate experience with running gear, sensors and the controller. Explain how you distinguished an unintended opening command from protective detection preventing closure. Identify the post-repair checks and whether access-control integration or a specific escape-route function formed part of the installation.
Practical questions about the trade
How does an automatic door's activation sensor differ from a safety sensor?
An activation device requests opening, for example after detecting an approaching person. A protective sensor monitors the passage or a danger zone and influences door movement. A door remaining open can therefore be a correct protective response. Diagnosis begins with understanding the signal's function; disabling protection does not resolve the cause of the condition.
Why do automatic swing doors and sliding doors need different adjustment?
Their leaves follow different paths and create different contact or trapping zones. A swing door sweeps space in front of or behind the leaf, while a sliding door moves along the opening. Drives, sensors and protected areas must match the installed door type. Copying settings from another entrance cannot replace checking the complete system in its actual location.
What is checked after replacing an automatic-door sensor or drive?
Checks cover activation, movement, protective responses and intended operating modes under the equipment and work instructions. Connected systems, such as access control, may also require verification. Results and observations are recorded for subsequent servicing. The fact that the door opens again does not by itself establish that every intended function survived the repair or adjustment.
