Order picker work in the Netherlands

Order pickers collect the exact items needed for each order. You check quantities and product codes so shipments leave complete and undamaged.

What does this occupation involve?

You follow a picking instruction delivered through a scanner, list or voice system. At each location you identify the item, confirm the amount and place it on the appropriate trolley or pallet. The emphasis is on building orders, rather than the full range of warehouse duties. A wrong variation or quantity can result in an incorrect delivery.

Picking the correct unit as well as the correct item

Order picking brings location, item and quantity together. A scanner or pick list directs the route, but the picker also checks the product variant, pack size and visible damage. A case containing several units is not the same as a single item. Depending on the goods, batch identity, expiry and the specified stock-rotation rule also matter. Orders need stable handling during internal transport. An empty location or scan mismatch is recorded through the warehouse process; choosing a similar item independently undermines both the order and stock accuracy.

What will you do?

  • Follow the order instructions and location sequence.
  • Check product codes, variations and quantities.
  • Scan and place products carefully on a trolley or pallet.
  • Report shortages, damage or unreadable labels.
  • Hand the completed order to packing or dispatch.

Where will you work?

You work in a warehouse or distribution centre. Distances, temperature and product weight vary. Powered equipment requires suitable instruction. The schedule may include daytime work or shifts.

What does a working day look like?

You check the scanner and equipment before collecting orders. Each step is confirmed using the site’s system. Differences are reported so stock records and customer orders can be corrected.

Which skills and experience help?

Attention, accurate counting and understanding labels matter. You need to report mistakes and follow designated routes. Scanner or picking-system experience helps, although the specific workplace system must be explained.

How can you develop?

You can broaden into warehouse duties, receiving or stock checks. Packing, dispatch or internal transport may follow with the appropriate additional instruction.

Your practical experience

An informative example distinguishes piece picking, case picking or pallet orders. Name the system used, such as a handheld scanner or voice picking, and any batch checks. Describing a pack-size mistake or stock discrepancy you caught shows how you maintain accuracy while working to a picking schedule.

Practical questions about the trade

What does an order picker check beyond scanning the barcode?

The scan must correspond to the requested location and item, but quantity, pack unit and product condition also need attention. Some goods require a particular batch or expiry. Similar descriptions are insufficient where product variants look alike. The order check confirms that the physical goods collected match the warehouse system's requirements, rather than merely producing a successful scan.

How does stock rotation affect warehouse order picking?

Stock rotation determines which stock should be issued first under the warehouse's rules. This may follow receipt order or, for dated goods, the relevant earliest expiry. The picking instruction and product requirements guide the choice. Check the required information and report discrepancies so that conveniently accessible stock does not incorrectly take priority over the stock intended for issue.

What should a picker do when the pick location is empty or short?

First check the location and the pack unit used for the requested quantity. Record the difference through the agreed process; replenishment, another location or a stock check may be needed. Do not confirm units that were not picked or substitute a similar product independently. Accurate exception reporting keeps the order status and inventory information usable for the next team.
