What does this occupation involve?
Packing takes place in manufacturing, distribution and specialist packaging businesses. It may involve manual wrapping, assembling sets or working on a line. Packaging prevents damage and identifies products, so quantities, variations and labels must be accurate. A small packing error can affect an entire order.
Packing protects the product and identifies the contents
A packer turns checked products into protected, identifiable units for sale or despatch. The job starts with the correct variant, quantity and packaging material. A fragile component needs different protection from standard items in a carton; food can also have specific hygiene and identification requirements. Closures, labels and visible product condition must match the instructions. On a line, irregular feeding or sealing also needs attention. Damaged products and incorrect labels are separated through the agreed process. Arranging the contents neatly is only one part of producing a suitable finished pack.
What will you do?
- Review the packing order and prepare products and materials.
- Check quantities, product variations and visible condition.
- Protect, pack or assemble products into sets as instructed.
- Check labels, codes and closures.
- Sort completed packs and report discrepancies.
Where will you work?
You usually work indoors at a table or line. Tasks may be repetitive and carried out standing or partly seated. Weight, pace, temperature and working hours vary.
What does a working day look like?
You review the batch and check an example pack before continuing. Labels and quantities remain important throughout. At a product change, old materials are cleared to avoid mixing different orders.
Which skills and experience help?
Accuracy, following instructions and noticing mistakes matter. Scanners, labelling equipment or packing-machine experience may help. Describe the products and whether you worked manually or on a line. Machine use needs separate instruction.
How can you develop?
You can learn different packing processes or broaden into production, order processing or quality checks. With training, operating a packaging line may be another step.
Your practical experience
Describe the products and method: packing cartons by hand, using a sealer or working on an automated line. An example involving quantity checks, a wrong label or damaged material shows the responsibility involved. Mention the protection used and how rejected packs stayed separate from products ready for despatch.
Practical questions about the trade
How does a packer select protection for goods being shipped?
The packing instruction defines the material and protection required. Shape, fragility and transport method influence the use of dividers, cushioning or a particular carton. The product needs to stay in place without damage from excessive pressure. Missing materials or unclear instructions should be resolved before substituting a different packing arrangement, because an improvised pack may not perform as intended.
Why are labels and quantities part of a packer's quality check?
A well-closed carton can still be wrong if its contents, quantity or label do not match the order. Compare the pack with the instruction and required identification. Some products also need batch, weight or grade checks. Old or incorrect labels must not carry into the next job unnoticed, as they can make the actual contents difficult to identify.
Which packing defects should be separated from normal production?
Examples include visible product damage, incorrect quantity, damaged packaging or a closure that fails the instruction. An unreadable or incorrect label also makes a pack nonconforming. Keep affected units identifiable and report them through the agreed process. Repair or repacking follows the specified assessment so that rejected goods do not inadvertently rejoin an order ready for despatch.
