What does this occupation involve?
Composite production appears in boatbuilding, technical manufacturing and transport. Hand lay-up, vacuum processes and finishing involve different skills. You follow a specified material build-up and process instruction. Careful preparation and records matter because defects are not always immediately visible. Resin handling and machining dust require the agreed protection and an appropriate working environment.
The fibre arrangement is part of the component
A composite laminator combines reinforcement with a resin system suited to the component. Glass or carbon fabrics and mats follow the production documentation, including layer order and orientation. Hand lay-up, infusion and prepreg work have different preparation and processing requirements. Mould condition and careful material placement contribute to quality. Vacuum processes also depend on suitable films, consumables and sealing. After cure, surface condition, dimensions and visible deviations are assessed, with production records connecting the finished result to the materials and process used.
What will you do?
- Check moulds, materials and the work order.
- Prepare reinforcement material to the required shape.
- Process layers and resin using the assigned method.
- Follow process steps and required checks.
- Release, finish or prepare parts for assembly.
Where will you work?
You often work in a specialist workshop or production hall. Temperature, cleanliness and storage can affect the process. You coordinate with colleagues responsible for moulds, finishing and assembly.
What does a working day look like?
You first check the mould and materials, then complete the lay-up or assigned operation in sequence. Checks are recorded during and after the process, and irregularities are discussed.
Which skills and experience help?
Precise handwork, patience and following instructions are valuable. Describe experience with glass fibre, carbon fibre, hand lay-up or vacuum techniques. Finishing parts is different from independently building a laminate.
How can you develop?
You can develop skills in complex shapes, process control or particular production methods. Experienced workers may also undertake quality tasks and support new colleagues.
Your practical experience
Describe a component through its reinforcement, resin system and manufacturing method. Explain how you followed the lay-up plan and prepared the mould. An example of identifying a dry area or trapped air, together with your role in cure and inspection, makes the experience specific.
Practical questions about the trade
How do hand lay-up, infusion and prepreg work differ?
Hand lay-up combines the reinforcement with resin during the work. Infusion introduces resin into a prepared reinforcement arrangement through a closed vacuum process. Prepreg already contains resin and needs its specified handling and cure conditions. These methods require different preparation and consumables, so experience with one should not be presented as complete competence in all three.
Why do fibre orientation and layer order matter to a laminator?
The component is designed around a particular combination of reinforcement and resin. The lay-up plan establishes where layers go and their orientation. A similar external appearance can conceal a different internal arrangement. Material, layer count and placement are therefore checked during production, before subsequent layers cover the earlier work and make inspection more difficult.
What defects does a composite laminator look for during inspection?
Inspection looks for departures from the specified product or process, such as dry areas, trapped air, damage or incorrect dimensions. The appropriate assessment depends on the component and work instruction. Not every internal defect is visible. Process records and any specified additional inspection therefore complement the examination of the finished surface.
