What does this occupation involve?

Bulb growing includes fieldwork and processing after harvest. Depending on the business, you may help with planting, crop care, lifting, sorting or packing. Keeping varieties and batches separate is important. This role focuses on bulb production rather than arranging bouquets or general greenhouse flower work.

Bulb work keeps variety, size and batch identity connected

A flower bulb worker takes part in growing and processing crops such as tulips or lilies. Duties vary by crop and season: planting, crop work, lifting, cleaning, grading and packing can belong to different stages. Growing bulbs is a different process from harvesting cut flowers. Processing considers size, damage and unusual appearance. Variety names, batch numbers and containers must remain identifiable. Storage follows the crop and intended destination, which may involve further cultivation or preparation of bulbs for flower production.

What will you do?

  • Review the crop, batch details and planned seasonal work.
  • Assist with assigned planting, crop care or harvesting tasks.
  • Sort bulbs and remove visibly unsuitable material as instructed.
  • Keep varieties, labels and batch information correctly matched.
  • Prepare products and clean equipment for storage or dispatch.

Where will you work?

You work in fields, processing sheds or storage areas at a bulb-growing business. Weather affects outdoor tasks, while harvesting and processing can create busy periods. The balance of manual work and machinery differs between farms.

What does a working day look like?

The team reviews the available crop and processing orders. You work on the assigned field or sorting task and check batch identification throughout. The day ends with cleaning, product handover and preparation for the next stage.

Which skills and experience help?

Careful sorting, reliable teamwork and willingness to work with seasonal routines help. Agricultural or packing experience can be useful. Explain whether you know particular crops, sorting lines or machinery and which tasks you can perform independently.

How can you develop?

You can gain experience across more stages of bulb production or train for relevant machinery. Product knowledge and accurate batch handling can lead to responsibilities in sorting, storage or supervising seasonal tasks.

Your practical experience

Name the bulb crop and production stage you worked in. Distinguish bulb cleaning, operating a grading line and manual selection. Explain how you kept batches separate and reported damaged or unusual bulbs. These details make seasonal experience understandable to another grower.

Practical questions about the trade

Does a large flower bulb automatically count as a healthy bulb?

Size and health are separate assessment points. A bulb can meet its size grade while still showing damage or an abnormal feature. Mechanical grading therefore does not replace every quality check. Workers apply the agreed selection criteria and refer uncertain examples to the responsible person; simple size sorting is not an independent disease diagnosis.

Why must varieties and batches stay separate during bulb cleaning and grading?

Batch identity connects the bulbs with their variety, origin, inspections and destination. A swapped label or mixed container can break that connection even when the bulbs look similar. Checking labels and batch changeovers is therefore part of production work. It matters alongside the physical cleaning, grading or packing performed at the station.

Can all flower bulbs be stored under the same conditions?

No. Crop, production stage and destination determine the appropriate storage or preparation. Tulips intended for flower production can receive different treatment from other planting material. Workers follow the instructions for the particular batch and report changes in the product or conditions. One fixed storage temperature is not a useful rule across all bulb work.
